Snowflake Tutorial

Get six square pieces of paper.  Square means that all of the sides are the same length, and all of the corners are 90˚ angles.  For this tutorial we used 6x6" squares.

Start with one of the squares.

Make sure your paper is flat and it helps to work on a flat surface.

Fold the square into a right triangle.

Fold it again.  This will also be a right triangle, half the size of the first.

Hold this triangle by it's 90˚ angle.  Place your scissors parallel to the longest side.

Make your first cut, starting at the bottom, parallel to the longest side.  Cut almost all way to the edge, but be careful NOT to cut all the way through.

Make two more cuts, parallel the the first cut.  Be careful not to cut all the way through.

Unfold the triangles back to your original square.

Lay it flat.

Okay, for this next part, you'll need something that sticks!  Hot glue, Elmer's Glue, Glue sticks, tape or a mini stapler would all work.

Take the smallest points in the middle and fold them toward each other.  We'll call this the first row. Overlap them just enough to glue them and make them stick.  Hold on tight for 30 seconds to make sure it's good and stuck!

Turn the whole thing over and repeat the last step with the second smallest points.  Turn it over again and overlap and glue the third row.

Finally, do this with the fourth (and final) row.

This is what it should look like if you've done it correctly.

Now, go make two more just like you did the first one.  Actually, you can go make all five and when they're complete you'll be ready to put your snowflake together.

Gather the three pieces together by their points at one end.

Staple them on the point.

When you're done, it should look like this.

Do this again with the last three pieces.

Put your two pieces together point-to-point and staple them together.

Well done!  You've made a beautiful snowflake to hang up!
